Organic Growth SEO Mistakes

We Wasted Six Months Chasing High Search Volume Keywords

Why traffic numbers don't equal business results

Our content strategy was built around a simple metric: monthly search volume. If a keyword had over 5,000 searches, we created content for it. We ranked for dozens of these terms and traffic increased 200%.

Revenue grew by 3%.

The Intent Problem

Most high-volume keywords in our space were informational. People researching basics, not looking for solutions. We ranked for terms like SEO basics and content marketing guide while our actual customers searched for niche phrases with 200 monthly searches.

A keyword with 10K searches and 0.1% conversion rate generates fewer customers than one with 500 searches and 5% conversion rate. We learned this after analyzing six months of data showing massive traffic but stagnant signups.

What Changed

We rebuilt our keyword strategy around customer interviews. Asked what they searched before finding us. Most mentioned specific problem-oriented queries we had completely ignored because the volume looked insignificant.

Now we target 50 keywords with under 1K monthly searches each. Traffic is lower, but revenue per visitor increased 300%. Search volume alone is a vanity metric without intent alignment.
